Papers, 1905-1972.

The papers of a political activist, public servant, and poet from Maine. The 2 microfilm reels (located in the Microforms Department in the Fogler Library - call number Microfilm J631) include the papers which were deposited in the Harvard University Library in Cambridge, Mass. They are largely concerned with labor conditions and laws pertaining to women and children in Massachusetts. Included in the folder in the Special Collections Department are correspondence, biographical material of Ethel McLean Johnson, photographs of her, postcards sent to her, and her poems and other writings. Included are copies of the Maine Writers' Conference Chapbooks (no. 8, 10-13), the New England Galaxy (winter 1971), and Flamingo (Dec. 1969). Included also is a typed statement of Ethel McLean Johnson at a meeting of the Simmons College Alumnae Association, June 6, 1970. Also included are 2 copies of her Teasing the donkey: political jingles, state, national and general, 1952-1968.

Ethel McLean Johnson was born in Brownfield, Maine. She graduated from Gorham State Normal School, studied library science at Simmons College, earned her B.A. at Boston University, and did graduate work at the American University in Washington, D.C. She gained recognition as an author of monographs, essays, dramas, and articles besides being an outstanding poet. She also published a book of political doggerel.
