Lucien A. Barnes family photograph collection [graphic]. [1870s-1930s]

The Barnes family collection is organized into two series, Portraits and Farm scenes. There are portraits of Judge A.H. Barnes, Lucien A. and Mary Barnes, A.H. and Caroline Barnes and family, Mr. and Mrs. Dell Barnes and a number of unidentified portraits. The Farm scenes series includes views of binding grain, farmhouses, haying, plowing, a stable and threshing machines. The farm series images likely were taken on the Barnes farm located southwest of Fargo. The majority of the images were taken between 1900 and 1920.

Lucien Barnes was born in 1840 in Martinsbrug, N.Y. and later lived in Delevan, Wisconsin. He and his wife Mary (Means) settled in Barnes Township, Cass County, N.D. Their son Alanson Herbert was born in 1872 and farmed in Barnes Township. Lucien's father Judge Alanson Herbert (A.H.) Barnes was born in 1818 and was an early judge in Dakota Territory before retiring to his home at Delevan, Wisconsin where he died in 1890. From the description of Lucien A.
