James Royal Jones papers, 1933-1954.

Chiefly scrapbooks, 1933-1954, with clippings, telegrams, ephemera, and some correspondence and photographs, re Jones' served as Commissioner of Agriculture during the Great Depression, World War II, and during the years after; clippings include biographical sketches of state legislators and others government officials; text of bills and debate pertaining to S.C. agriculture and concerns of farmers, as well as some national issues relating to cotton. Scrapbook volume, 1933, re the restructuring and consolidation of the offices of Warehouse Commissioner and Commissioner of Agriculture during JRJ's tenure; volume, 1934-1937, re cultivation and marketing of tobacco and cotton, and other items of general interest; volume, 1936-1937, re the child labor amendment adopted by the U.S. Congress in 1924 but rejected (and not ratified) by lawmakers in S.C. and seven other states in 1925 [when Jones compiled this volume, the amendment would have recently been in the news following Louisiana's 2nd and 3rd rejections of an end to child labor in 1934 and 1936]. Two scrapbook volumes, 1936-1938, re an investigation by JRJ into alleged undergrading of stored cotton by cooperatives; and 4 vols. (1946, 1950, and 1954), re campaigns in 1946 and 1950 against Alred W. Bethea and in 1954 against Edward Briggs Baskin, including clippings re the campaign and the statewide returns. Scrapbook volume, 18 June - 29 July 1946, consisting of campaign materials from J. Roy Jones candidacy for re-election as Commissioner of Agriculture. Includes photostat of letter, 18 June 1946, from U.S. Senator Elmer Thomas, Chairman, Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry, applauding Jones for his work as president of the National Association of Commissioners, Secretaries and Directors of Agriculture; and broadside, 25 July 1946, issued by the Fort Mill Times endorsing Jones and discounting the campaign efforts of his opponent, Alfred Bethea. Campaign materials issued by Jones are illustrated with his image; and menu, 13 Feb. 1933, for "Democratic luncheon for the Hon. James A. Farley, Chairman Democratic National Committee," printed on folded cardstock with image of the Jefferson Hotel (Columbia, S.C.).
