Logbooks of the cargo ships S.S. Bantam and the S.S. Peregrine White, 1943.

The logbooks were kept by an unidentified officer, possibly Francis L. Berkeley, Jr. The Bantam logbook 1943 February 15 -September 6 records duties as an officer of the Naval Armed Guard on a voyage from Philadelphia to Freemantle, Australia, to Persian Gulf ports to ports on western coast of South America and back to New York. On Saturday March 13 he records "discussed construcion needs with Paul Mellon of War Shipping Commission." He also notes Thomas Jefferson's 200th birthday. The logbook of the Liberty Ship Peregine White, 1943 September 28-December 3, contains lists of shore leaves, particularly for Edinburgh. A tourist map of Edinburgh, produced by the American Red Cross Service Club is laid in. Also present is a program from a memorial service for Francis Lewis Berkeley, Jr. which occurred on May 4, 2003.
