Letters document Ingalls' successful effort to reorganize the Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Lafayette Railroad out of bankruptcy, using Boston capital as the key to this recovery. Besides letters from Joseph Story Fay, T.H. Perkins, Laurence Curtis, Henry Parkman, William H.H. Andrews and others, there are minutes of meetings, financial records and lists of shareholders.

Melville Ingalls was president and receiver of the Indianapolis, Cincinnati, and Lafayette Railroad Company which was headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio. This railroad company was reorganized during the 1870's as the Cincinnati, Lafayette, and Chicago Railway Company.
