Reid F. Ellsworth story : an account of war and divine interposition, 1997.

Ellsworth, in this memoir of his experience in World War II, relates how he came into the military, his training, bombing missions he participated in, his being shot down over Italy, his evasion, capture, imprisonment, escape attempts, and eventual freedom. When he and the rest of his planes crew were shot down over Italy, he followed orders to stay with rural Italian families and attempt to make his way back to American forces. He speaks of a family which he stayed with for over a month before he was captured by Italian officers and transported, prison camp to prison camp, from Italy to Germany eventually to Poland. He recounts his and others numerous escape attempts, and of daily life in the camp in which he lived. Finally escaping from as they entire group of prisoners were being transferred in the wake of approaching Russian forces, Ellsworth made his way back to American forces, and home to a full and honorable discharge.
