Briggs collection, 1955-1964.

This is a small collection of materials from a short period of General Briggs' thirty-five year military career. Included is personal and official correspondence, biographical data, and a report written by Briggs entitled "Trends in Programmed Instruction." Photographs of official functions and ceremonies attended by General Briggs are also contained within the collection.

James Elbert Briggs (1906-1979) was born in Rochester, New York, the son of Bendsmin Robert and Marion Cypert Briggs. He entered the New York Military Academy in 1920 and, as an honor graduate, in 1924 received a presidential appointment to the U.S. Military Academy. He was "cadet first captain" (regimental commander) his last year at West Point and graduated 31st in a class of 261 in 1928. He was commissioned a second lieutenant of Field Artillery.
