James Drayton Nance papers, 1860-1912, bulk (1860-1866).

Chiefly Civil War correspondence of James D. Nance, his brother William Frederick Nance, his sister Laura Elvira Nance, his sister and brother-in-law Frances Caldwell "Fannie" and James M. Baxter, and other Newberry acquaintances. Among pre-Civil War items are two letters, 17 and 29 Mar. 1860, from C.D. Barksdale, Charleston, S.C., concerning the purchase of Farmers & Exchange Bank stock. Civil War letters of interest include: 20 July 1862, James D. Nance, Camp Jackson near Richmond, Va., noting that his unit was one of three from S.C. that was "uniformed"; 21 July 1863, John J. Brantly, Newberry, S.C., lamenting the loss of life at Gettysburg; 19 Aug. 1863, John J. Brantly, Fayetteville, N.C., decrying anti-war sentiment in N.C.; 27 Jan. 1864, James M. Baxter, relating the story of kinsman Simeon Pratt, who had been staying in Baxter's home when it was discovered that he was a Confederate deserter. Photographs in the collection consist of two cartes-de-visite portraits of two men in Confederate uniform, one of whom is identified as James D. Nance; images taken by Quinby & Co. and R.L. Steele; also includes stereograph of the White House of the Confederacy in Richmond, Va. [ca. 1866?], titled "Mansion occupied by Jeff. Davis, during the rebellion."
