Bernstein met Thomas Wolfe in 1925 on a voyage between Europe and New York. Wolfe and Bernstein, the wife of a prominent New York stock broker and 18 years older than Wolfe, became lovers in Oct. 1925 and remained so for the next five years. He attended Cornelia public schools, Piedmont College, the University of North Carolina (Class of 1920), and Emory Law School.
