Letters, 1861-1862, 1864.

Letters to John S. Sargent a friend from Hutton and a soldier in the 8th Illinois Calvary. Most were sent from Camp Defiance in Cairo, Illinois. In several he discusses visiting the plantation of Isaac Bird in Missouri. He mentions visiting the slave quarters. Is taken with Miss Bird, "her angelic form haunts my pillow of straw". Mentions the capture of a steamboat on its way to New Orleans loaded with firearms and ammunition for the South. In one letter from Arkansas he states that although they have asked for battle news "it is no pleasant place to be to behold men all torn to pieces by canon balles or shels." One letter from Fort Donelson, Feb. 21, 1862, describes his experience at that battle. July 16, 1864 letter states he has resigned and is going to Mexico.

ISAAC BIRD, 1793-1876 (Y.1816) ISAAC BIRD, son of Isaac and Rhoda (Selleck) Bird, was born in Salisbury, Conn., June 19, 1793.
