This collection consists mostly of portrait photographs of various members of the Howells family, as well as relatives from the Mead and Hayes families. Subjects include novelist William Dean Howells, his wife Elinor Mead Howells, sculptor Larkin Goldsmith Mead, and Lucy Webb Hayes, wife of Rutherford B. Hayes, among many others. Photographers include Augustus Marshall and George Kendall Warren of Boston, Mass., as well as Pach Bros.. of Cambridge, Mass., among others. Includes cartes de visite, cabinet cards, and other paper-based photographs.

George K. Warren (1834-1884) was an American photographer active in Massachusetts in the second half of the 19th century. He was based in Lowell, Massachusetts from 1850 to 1870 and moved to Boston in 1870, where he worked until his death in 1884.
