James and Henry Vandergrift signed on as indentured apprentices to learn making and laying bricks and the spinning business with John and Nathaniel Hay. John Hay owned a brick business in Springfield, largely managed by his son, Nathaniel. They brought charges against the Hays stating that they had not kept them dressed appropriately, made them work on the Sabbath and had not taught them spinning, per the contract.
