Kemp Plummer Battle (1831-1919) of Chapel Hill and Raleigh, N.C., was a lawyer and president of the Chatham Railroad. He was active in state affairs during the Civil War and served as state treasurer and as University of North Carolina president, 1876-1891, and professor of history, 1891-1907. Nicholas Vachel Lindsay was born in Springfield, IL. He studied in Ohio, Chicago, and New York and acquired a reputation as a poet and lecturer. Lindsay became famous for his walk from Springfield, IL to New Mexico in 1912, and for an unusual method of writing poetry. In 1924 he arrived in Spokane where he worked as a columnist for the "Spokesman-Review". He returned to Springfield in 1929, and at the time of his death was a major figure in American poetry.
