Minutes and Reports 1921-1930.

This series comprises handwritten and printed minutes pertaining to mission work carried out by the The Evangelical Lutheran Joint Synod of Ohio and Other States (JSO) with the Mexican people living in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. The minutes are from 1922-1930 and were recorded by three boards or committees that had responsibility for Mexican Mission work from 1922-1930. From 1922-1924 the JSO Board of Foreign Mission had the responsibility for Mexican Mission work and as such, the minutes note that business matters concerning this mission were considered at the end of the regular meeting of the BFM. In 1924 responsibility for the mission reverted back to a committee started by the Texas District, the Committee on Mexican Missions but placed under the responsibility of the JSO. Minutes from 1926-1930 reflect the organizational change for oversight of the work from a committee to the Board on Mexican Missions. Handwritten minutes from 1922-1926 are in a bound notebook and the remainder of the series contains printed, typewritten minutes from 1926-1930. In the early years of the mission, much of the minutes are devoted to efforts to call a pastor to work in the mission area. Throughout the minutes there are references to other business matters, such as taking care of invoices, travel arrangements, efforts to acquire property on which to construct a church building, financial matters, church building construction matters, efforts to find new mission fields, and work in other communities. There are also two records that are not minutes, but a copy of a contract to purchase a piece of property, and a report from 1921 pertaining to future possibilities of Mexican mission work. In addition to the paper records, the archives also has microfiche copies of minutes from 1922-1930. Records are arranged chronologically.

Originally established as a special conference of the Pennsylvania Ministerium in 1812, the Joint Synod petitioned the ministerium to form an independent body in 1817, and in 1818 the first general conference of the synod was held in Somerset, Ohio. The Joint Synod merged with the Buffalo Synod, Iowa Synod and Texas Synod in 1930 to form the American Lutheran Church. See C.V. Sheatsley's History of the Joint Synod of Ohio for further background.
