William Wines Phelps papers, 1835-1865.

Collection contains letters and journal extracts written by Phelps and his family between 1835 and 1865. The majority of the papers in this collection are correspondences written by Phelps. Phelps apparently created a journal of the letters he wrote, and several of the items in this collection appear to be pages taken from that journal. Whether they are the original letters that he sent and later gathered into a journal, or pages from a journal where he copied letters he had previously written, is unknown. The majority of the letters are to his wife, Sally, in Clay County, Missouri, during the time he was in Kirtland, Ohio, with several of the brethren of the Church. Many of the pages are just portions of letters and contain some sort of page numbering at the top, but they are not sequential. Written on the backside of some of Phelps's letters are letters written by John Corrill to his wife, Margaret. The collection also contains some original letters from other family members to Phelps, including his wife, Sally, and his son, James. There are seventeen items in total. Included in the collection are photocopies and typescripts of all the items.
