Frederick W. Sardeson was born on February 22, 1866 in Owego Mills, Wisconsin. He earned his B.S. in 1891 and M.S. in 1892 from the University of Minnesota. For the next two years, Sardeson was a instructor of paleontology at the University. In 1895, he attended the University of Freiburg, Germany and earned his Ph.D. Dr. Sardeson returned to the University of Minnesota in 1898 as instructor of paleontology and was appointed the rank of assistant professor in 1905. Newton Horace Winchell came to Minnesota in 1872 when the Legislature offered him $1,000 to complete the first geological survey of the state. He was the first person to map Minnesota's geology and mineral deposits; he discovered the valuable low-grade iron ore deposits of the Mesabi and Vermilion ranges.
