Polly (Brig) logbook, 1804-1807; bulk: 1804-1805.

The logbook of the brig Polly details a shipping voyage from Portland, Me., to Martinique, and a voyage from Portland to Alexandria and Norfolk, Va., and Lisbon, Portugal, Oct. 1804-Aug. 1805. The master was Samuel Robinson; the logbook keeper was Thomas E. Baker. The logbook's illustrations include watercolor paintings of harbors and profile views, portraits and ships, as well as mention of at least one death, examples of poetry and sea songs, instances of the diseases dysentery and smallpox, and a quarantine. The logbook also includes accounts of vessels on which Baker sailed 1805-1807. During its voyage, the Polly spoke the brigs Betsy (out of Boston), Cyrus (out of Newburyport, Mass.), and Waven; the schooners Good Intent and Iris (both out of Salem, Mass.), and Hitty (out of Beverly, Mass.), and the ship William and Henry (out of New York).
