Papers of John S. Battle, 1933-1991 (bulk 1955-1959).

The papers pertain to Battle in his capacity as Charlottesville, Va., City Attorney and attorney for the Charlottesville School Board. The collection consists chiefly of clippings regarding the closing of the Charlottesville, Va., schools, 1958-1959, a dispute over funds for a consolidated Fluvanna County elementary school for African-Americans in 1957, together with a speech by Battle before the Venable School PTA, and an Appendix on Behalf of Appellants, United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in the case of the Charlottesville School Board vs. Doris Marie Allen, et al. The collection also contains clippings, 1955-1979, concerning Piedmont Airlines, University of Virginia football star Bill Dudley, and the Westinghouse uranium contract case; a campaign brochure for state senatorial candidate William Massie Smith, and a photograph of pupils in the Charlottesville School for Boys meeting Herbert Hoover in Washington.
