The collection contains notes for sermons and a leaf from Beecher's book "Life of Jesus the Christ." Letters concern the moral character of Henry Whitney Cleaaveland, recommendations and introductions, our-of-print books, and the favorable results of using certain throat lozenges. The collection also contains two photographs, one of Beecher and one of a statue of him. Miscellaneous items include two autographs and an admission card to the Beecher-Theodore Tilton trial signed by Benjamin Franklin Tracy. Correspondents include George Bancroft, Salmon Portland Chase and Henry Whitney Cleaveland.

George Bancroft was an American historian and statesman, and an active promoter of secondary education both in his home state and at the national level. As U. S. Secretary of the Navy under James K. Theodore Tilton (1835-1907) was an American newspaper editor, journalist, poet, and supporter of women's suffrage. He and his wife were parishioners of the Rev. Henry Ward Beecher and Tilton worked as his assistant for eleven years, until 1874, when Tilton sued Beecher for adultery with Mrs. Tilton. The case received widespread public attention. Benjamin F. Tracy, a lawyer, served as Secretary of the Navy, 1889-1893, where he presided over the development of the Modern Navy and the increase in the number of battleships and the formation of a naval reserve.
