Enlow collection, 1850-ca. 1941 (bulk 1875-1895).

Primarily personal and business letters (chiefly holograph) written and received by several generations of family members. The collection includes letters to Samuel and Huldah from their siblings and children; letters to James Sullivan and Clara Enlow; letters to and from Martha and William Steer; letters to Lauretta and Edward Hollingsworth from Clarence Hollingsworth, Ellen Keatley and Lucinda Hollingsworth. Many of the letters were sent to Iowa from California and convey family experiences related to the settlement and growth of that state in the 1880's and 1890's. Also included are some business records from Samuel and Huldah Enlow; various deeds and mortgage agreements; canceled checks and deposit slips; the last will and testament (with rough drafts) by Huldah Enlow; the obituary, a diary, law notebooks, diplomas and certificates of James Sullivan Enlow; miscellaneous notes by Lois Hollingsworth; the marriage certificate of Edward Hollingsworth and Lauretta Enlow; memoranda of California trips to visit Ellen Keatley by Lauretta; and a scrapbook of newspaper clippings pasted into an 1878 edition of Pettengill's newspaper directory and advertiser's hand-book.

Temperance organization founded in Cleveland, Ohio in 1874. Campaigning against the use of alcohol and in favor of labor laws and prison reform, the W.C.T.U. became one of the largest and most influential women's organizations of the 19th century. It became global when the World W.C.T.U. was founded in 1883.
