Alan Stout (b. 1932) is an American composer. He studied concurrently at Johns Hopkins University (BS 1954) and the Peabody Conservatory. After a year at the University of Copenhagen, he completed his formal musical training at the University of Washington (MA 1959). His teachers included Henry Cowell, Wallingford Riegger, Vagn Holmboe, and John Verrall. In 1962 he joined the Northwestern University School of Music. Biographical Note: Elliott Coleman (1906-80) was a poet and founder and director of The Writing Seminars at The Johns Hopkins University. Coleman was born in 1906 in Binghamton, N.Y. the son of a clergyman. He graduated from Wheaton College in 1928, taught at The Asheville School in Asheville, N.C., and studied at the Princeton Theological School and the General Theological Seminary in 1940.
