Fred M. Shideler papers, 1940-1983.

Collection primarily consists of subject files. Included is a typescript of a biography of William Jasper Kerr, by Edwin T. Reed; materials pertaining to the retirement of E.B. Lemon and A.L. Strand; records of an oral history project documenting the career of Strand; materials pertaining to the University's Centennial in 1968; a student paper written by Shideler in 1940; and papers presented at annual meetings of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges in 1962 and 1970. Much of the collection consists of drafts of speeches, statements, news releases and correspondence drafted by Shideler for James H. Jensen.

Edwin Thomas Reed was born in River Falls, Wisconsin on September 15, 1872. He attended the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1895 with a B.S. He then studied composition and literature at Harvard, earning a B.A. Reed spent a number of years at newspaper and teaching jobs in Wisconsin and Minnesota, followed by ten years as the English Department chair at Moorhead (Minnesota) State Teachers College. Born in Sherman County, Oregon, in 1889, Erwin Bertran Lemon graduated with a degree in Business from OAC in 1911. That same year, Lemon's longtime association with the University continued with his appointment as a part-time instructor of accounting. Teaching for the School of Commerce until 1943, Lemon also held the post of University Registrar for 21 years (1922 to 1943) during this period. Shideler was born in Girard, Kansas in 1904. He earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from Kansas State College in 1927 and an MA in education from Oregon State College in 1941. In 1929, he began a career at OSU that spanned 41 years. He started as a journalism instructor and an assistant in the OSC News Bureau.
