Robert Neel Proctor (1954-) was born in Texas. He received his bachelor's degree in biology from Indiana University at Bloomington in 1976, and his master's and doctoral degrees in the history of science from Harvard University in 1977 and 1984 respectively. While working on his doctorate, Proctor studied abroad in France and Germany.
