Oscar K. Swayze papers, 1856-1949 (bulk 1914-1940).

The majority of this collection consists of Oscar Swayze's personal correspondence and papers. Much of the correspondence is with personal friends and family members. These include: his younger sister, Annie Lawrie (Swayze) Charles; his older sister, Julia Harriet Swayze; and his stepbrother, Jason Clarke Swayze, Jr. Topics in the collection include the U.S. Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen & Abandoned Lands; Reconstruction in Georgia; Hall Lithographing Co.; Freemasons; the Kansas Free Fair; the Kansas Official Council; the Republican Party; Topeka & Shawnee County, Kan.; the South Side Civic Improvement Club; the Topeka Republican Flambeau Club; and the Topeka Press Club. Also included is a small collection of diaries & papers, 1856-1877, of Swayze's father, Jason Clarke Swayze, and records of the 1915 county officials' convention, the Topeka Abdallah Shrine (1920), Topeka chapters of the Modern Woodmen of America & Freemasons, and other organizations. In addition, there is a biographical sketch of his mother, Kate Lucy Edwards (Mrs. J. C.) Swayze, and reminiscences, 1925 Mar. 28. Correspondents include John R. Johnston and M. C. Morris.

The Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands, usually referred to as simply the Freedmen's Bureau, was a U.S. federal government agency that aided distressed freedmen (freed slaves) in 1865–1869, during the Reconstruction era of the United States.
