Irving Emery Gray was born on May 23, 1897, in Providence, Rhode Island. He received a BA from the University of Massachusetts in 1921, followed by an MS and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. Gray came to Duke in 1931 after holding positions at De Pauw and Tulane. His specialty was the adaptation and ecology of marine life. Arthur Sperry Pearse was Professor of Zoology at Duke University from 1927 until his retirement in 1948.
