Ervin J. Eldridge correspondence, 1861 July-1862 December.

Collection (02-292) primarily consists of 11 detailed and expressive letters between Dr. Eldridge and his wife, Emma Eldridge. Dr. Eldridge wrote from various camp locations, including Richmond and Camp Pickens (Manassas Junction, Va.). Topics include war news, his need for supplies from home, and his work operating on soldiers wounded in combat and tending others suffering from disease. From their home at Flat Pond (Lee County, Ga.), Emma writes of her hopes for victory, the obtuseness of the Northern Army, and the war's effects on Lee County, among other home-front concerns. There are also photocopies of Dr. Eldridge's military records and other background material. Acquired as part of the Alfred and Elizabeth Brand Collection of Rare Books and Manuscripts.
