Joseph Asbury Edwards papers, 1899 and n.d.

Collection primarily comprises Edwards' handwritten Civil War reminiscences and two typed transcriptions of those reminiscences. The reminiscences (1899) cover Edward's active service as a sharpshooter, from April 1861 to September 1864. Edwards mentions his part in several battles, including Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the 2nd Battle of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Courthouse, Cold Harbor, and other campaigns. Other topics include the treatment of African-American Union injured; the lack of supplies, especially shoes; and the capture of enemy forces. The collection also features a photograph of Edward's portrait; an annotated list of the members of the Gallant Davis Rifles (Macon County, Ga.) of the Confederate Army; a list of confederate soldiers buried in Marshallville, Ga.; and a certificate for Edward's appointment as judge of the Macon County court (1899).
