Cynthia (Brig) logbook, 1804.

The logbook of the brig Cynthia details a shipping voyage from Salem, Mass., to Emden and Eckwarderhorne, Germany, Mar.-Sept. 1804. The brig's home port was Salem; the owners were Thomas Perkins and John Hancock Andrews; the master was Andrews; the logbook keeper was John Snelling. The logbook includes nots on animals seen during the voyage and shipboard occupations; cargo inventories; at least one incidence of naval desertion; and disorderly conduct among the merchant mariners on board. During its voyage, the Cynthia spoke the ships Endeavor (out of Salem), Manchester (out of N.Y.), and Sampson (out of Boston), and the brigs Hope (out of Boston) and Phoenix (out of Salem?).
