Union (Ship : 1809-1823) logbook abstract, 1809-1817.

The logbook abstract of the ship Union details four shipping voyages from Salem, Mass., to Gibraltar, Calcutta, Australia, and Sumatra, July 1809-Sept. 1811, April 1815-Feb. 1817. The abstract does not continue while in port. The ship's home port was Salem; the owners were Stephen C. Phillips and George Peirce; the masters were Peirce and William Osgood; the logbook keeper was Osgood. The abstract includes equipment and supplies, specifically provisions, and a fire aboard ship. During its voyages, the Union spoke the ships Favorite and Gold Image and the brig Essex (all out of Salem), and the brig Orient (out of Marblehead).

Peirce earned his B.S. at Harvard in 1890 and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Leipzig, 1894. He taught at Indiana University before coming to Stanford University in 1897 as assistant professor of botany.
