Papers of William Newton Hale, 1951-1954.

The collection contains client files of correspondence and architectural drawings for projects, chiefly in Albemarle County and central Virginia. Most are from Hale's own practice, 1951-1954, and others from his tenure with the firm of Grigg and Johnson, 1945-1951. Projects include the Russell Alger residence in Farmington; the David Smith residence in Greenwood; the Donald Stevens residence in Cismont; the Commonwealth Courts motel, now part of the Kluge Children's Rehabilitation Center; the Salvation Army building (now demolished) in Charlottesville; the Charles Barham residence and store; the M.A. Cushman residence and business; J. Deering Daniel's Esso Service Station; residences in the Bellair subdivision, and alterations to Tufton. In addition there are student drawings from University of Virginia architecture courses, 1940-1943; office files including appointments, accounts, receipts, expenses, and time books; and idea files of magazine clippings. There are also three sheets containing detail drawings by Milton Grigg, including one for Gadsby's Tavern, Alexandria, and one for Hollymead, Albemarle County, Va.; working drawings for Farmington Country Club by Grigg and Marshall Wells; and blueprint working drawings for the Howard Johnson Restaurant by Joseph A. Cicco. Of interest are four blueprint renderings of Bremo by an unknown artist and a site plan for Corotoman.

400 items + 400 architectural drawings.
