Letter, 1837 Nov. 4, Pendleton, S.C., to Patrick Calhoun, West Point, N.Y.

Letter of S.E. Maxwell, expressing pleasure at having received a letter from his boyhood friend, Patrick Calhoun (1821-1858), who was enrolled at the United States Military Academy; Calhoun was the son of John C. Calhoun (1782-1850). Maxwell comments on the lack of fun since Calhoun left Pendleton, S.C., for West Point, N.Y.; mentions the marriage of Thomas Cherry scheduled for Tuesday night, and the outcome of [horse] races between competitors from Pendleton and Greenville, S.C., in which Maxwell laments that "Greenville won all the money."
