Reverend Samuel Spriggs photograph collection [graphic], 1899-1908.

The prints were made from lantern slides and reflect the unique subsistence lifestyle of the people of Barrow (Utqiagvik) and Pt. Barrow (Nuvuk) and the change introduced by Presbyterian mission activities. The bulk of the collection relates to Inupiaq traditional activities such as whaling (preparation for the hunt, butchering and celebration). A series of views shows the building of an umiaq. Dwellings and caches, the Spriggs, the Presbyterian mission, school, and Inupiat families are all represented in these images.
