The logbook of the bark Active details a shipping voyage from Salem, Mass., to Suriname and return to Salem, March-July 1804. The bark's home port was Salem; the owners were Benjamin and Gamaliel Hodges and George and Ichabod Nichols; the master was John Endicott; the logbook keeper was Francis Boardman. The logbook includes a list of the merchant mariners on board, and comments on Suriname's history, specifically on the English takeover of Suriname from the Dutch. During its voyage, the Active spoke the brig Cynthia, the ship Enterprise, the sloop Washington, and the schooners Hiram, Saucy Jack, and Susannah.
