Dr. Charles F. Johnson papers, 1879-1944.

Collection consists primarily of Johnson's outgoing correspondence in letterpress copy books, some published information related to Union Medical College, and his minor writings. The bulk of the collection covers the three years following the Boxer Rebellion. The letterpress books are extremely fragile. They include his personal correspondence with family, friends, colleagues, and all official outgoing communications for the Yizhou Fu medical mission and hospital, many related to daily operations. Letters include topics related to the Boxer Rebellion (foreign policy, suffering of the local people, and a transcribed oral history of the Shansi massacre at Fenzhoufu). Included is an itemized catalog of the mission's losses to the Boxer Rebellion. Details of his training of local men in medical science and the progress of Johnson's medical curriculum, including yearly reports on his Chinese students, data related to the dispensary and hospital, and anecdotes on Chinese traditional medicine are documented. Documents provide a fragmentary overview of the evolution of the Union Medical College. Two diaries are included, a personal one (1877-1879), and a professional one (1893).
