Carl Haag letters, 1870-1877.

The collection consists of two letters: to Thomas Smith Cafe, 11 Jan. 1870, returning a painting that had been lent for an exhibition in Germany; to J.J. Jenkins, 13 April 1877, with an invitation to dinner and a chance to look over a folio of Eastern sketches.

Carl Haag was a German-born artist and traveler, active in Great Britain. He initially studied as a miniaturist, but learned watercolor techniques in England. He travelled extensively throughout the Middle East, his respectful watercolors helping him to become one of the leading Orientalists of his day. He was a popular and successful artist, receiving several commissions from the Queen and serving as court painter to the Duke of Saxe-Coburg. From the description of Carl Haag letters...
