Humorist and author Robert Barr was born in Scotland, and raised in Canada, where he became headmaster of a school in Ontario. He published a humorous sketch of a boating trip in the Detroit Free Press under the pseudonym Luke Sharp, and embarked on a diverse and successful career in literature. He worked as a journalist in Detroit and London, writing short fiction as well, before co-founding The Idler.
