Letters to James Breckinridge, 1825.

The collection contains two circular letters sent to Board of Visitors members by Jefferson. The letters, in the hand of an amanuensis, are addressed and signed by Jefferson. Breckinridge has docketed both copies. In a circular letter with cover sent to Board of Visitors members, 1825 August 4, Jefferson reports that four men have declined the law professorship and Francis W. Gilmer has accepted. He accounts for the spending of $50,000, chiefly for the Library, books and apparatus. In a circular letter with cover sent 1825 September 10, Jefferson informs the Visitors that his health prevents him from attending a meeting of the Board and invites them to Monticello to discuss Board matters prior to the formal meeting on October 3.
