L. A. Levensaler papers, 1903-1973.

The L. A. Levensaler Papers consist of a scrapbook of letters written by Levensaler to Ralph MacKay in the years 1955-1973; MacKay's annotated compilation of excerpts from those letters; and three photograph albums plus 196 photographic copy prints. The letters contain Levensaler's reminiscences of his days working as a mining engineer in Alaska and provide identifications for some of the photographs. The photograph albums document copper prospecting surveys in which Levensaler participated, primarily in the Copper River and Prince William Sound regions of Alaska. Among the copy prints, which include a group of photographs from Charles H. Lighthall, are images of mining, prospecting, and mining camps in the Copper River region (Dan Creek, Shushana, Nizina, Chitina River, Nabesna, Chistochina) and in Prince William Sound (Ellamar, Fidalgo Copper Company), as well as scenes of Valdez, Kodiak, and Talkeetna, Alaska, images of a Fourth of July celebration in Valdez in 1908, and interior views of the Russian Orthodox church in Kodiak. Also found in this series are a photocopy of an exchange of letters between Levensaler and W. E. Dunkle, June 1953; a photocopy of the paper "Economic Geology and History of the Copper River District, Alaska" by W. E. Dunkle; and a photocopy of a typed transcription of Levensaler's oral history interview in November 1959 on the topic of early days of Kennecott, Alaska (interviewer Henry C. Carlisle).
