Sears and MacDougall family papers, 1890-1962.

The papers document the lives and interests of the Mason Sears family as well as the family of his wife, Zilla MacDougall (Sears). The collection is in six series. Series I, Correspondence of Mason Sears, consists of Letters received (1916-1960), from his father, Philip Shelton Sears, a sculptor, and mother, Mary Cabot Higginson (Sears), from Zilla MacDougall Sears, from his brother David, from extended family, and from friends and associates, and Letters sent (1922-1960); subjects include school life at St. Marks and Harvard, his service with the U.S. State Department delegation to Peking, China, Republican Party politics in Massachusetts, his stint in the Navy during World War II, and his activities as U.S. delegate to the United Nations' Trusteeship Council visiting Africa. Series II, Mason Sears journals and diaries. Series III, Correspondence of Zilla MacDougall Sears. Series IV, Zilla MacDougall Sears journals and diaries. Series V, Correspondence of extended family members. Series VI, Journals and diaries of extended family members. Series V & VI includes material relating to Zilla MacDougall's sister, Charlotte, who was married to Danish diplomat Henrik de Kauffmann.
