Composer and arts administrator Allen Sapp was born in Philadelphia in 1922. He studied with Walter Piston at Harvard University, and privately with Nadia Boulanger and Aaron Copland. Sapp taught at Harvard University (1950-58) and Wellesley College (1958-1961), then became chair of the Music Department at the State University of New York at Buffalo (1961-1975), where he co-founded the Center for Creative and Performing Arts.
