James Augustus Aloysius Joyce was born on February 2, 1882, in Rathgar, a borough of Dublin, Ireland, the eldest of ten children who survived infancy. In 1888 he was enrolled at Clongowes Wood College, a Jesuit boarding school near Dublin, where he stayed until 1891. Thereafter he attended Belvedere College, and then University College, Dublin, where he graduated in 1902 with a major in Italian. Composer and arts administrator Allen Sapp was born in Philadelphia in 1922. He studied with Walter Piston at Harvard University, and privately with Nadia Boulanger and Aaron Copland. Sapp taught at Harvard University (1950-58) and Wellesley College (1958-1961), then became chair of the Music Department at the State University of New York at Buffalo (1961-1975), where he co-founded the Center for Creative and Performing Arts.
