William Eagle Clarke was born on 16 March 1853 in Leeds. He was educated at Leeds Grammar School and Yorkshire College. Between 1906 and 1921, he served as keeper of the Natural History Department at the Royal Scottish Museum in Edinburgh, where he was honorary supervisor of the bird collection.
