Series 6 of record group 85-37 consists of material relating to water wells in Michigan, from the Michigan Geological Survey Division, for the years 1936-1980. Contains correspondence, photographs, reports, publications, a manual, and drawings. These records were created in the process of research on how to maximize the potential of most water wells. A researcher may find these records useful in determining the technical advances made in well drilling procedures over a 45-year period.

The Michigan Geological Survey was created by Public Act 20 of 1837. Its purpose was to conduct a geological and mineralogical survey of the state. The state legislature appointed Douglass Houghton the first state geologist (1837). In 1921, the state legislature established the Department of Conservation, and the Michigan Geological Survey became part of that department (Public Act 17 of 1921).
