Great Lakes subject files, 1938-1978.

Series 2 of record group 85-37 consists of Great Lakes subject files from the Geological Survey Division of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources for the years 1938-1978. Contains reports, correspondence, memoranda, photographs, maps, newspaper clippings, and publications. These records were used for review and policy decisions. Of special note is the material on lake levels from 1948 to 1974, which may help determine the cyclic nature and general trends in the Great Lakes water levels. Also of note is the material on shorelines in many of the counties of Michigan.

The Michigan Geological Survey was created by Public Act 20 of 1837. Its purpose was to conduct a geological and mineralogical survey of the state. The state legislature appointed Douglass Houghton the first state geologist (1837). In 1921, the state legislature established the Department of Conservation, and the Michigan Geological Survey became part of that department (Public Act 17 of 1921).
