This series contains correspondence, memoranda, minutes of meetings, selected documentation from grant proposals, photographs, and publications. The records were produced by the department heads and faculty members of the Department of Chemistry. The series spans the years 1909-1992. Correspondence files of the department heads comprise the bulk of the series. Major correspondents include department heads Frank Schirmer, Floyd Brownley, Garth Spencer, Rudolph Abramovitch, and John Petersen, as well as Deans Clayton Aucoin, Arnold Schwartz, and Henry Vogel. Other significant subjects represented within the files include curriculum and degree program development, the National Science Foundation Summer Institute for teachers at the secondary level, and the renovations of Brackett Hall.
