Arthur and Ella Coole papers, 1908-1974.

Collection consists of correspondence, school and church records, newsletters, newspaper clippings, and biographical materials. Rev. Coole's self-published autobiography is included. Correspondence, 1909-1974, includes letters from Frank Cartwright, Director of the U.S. Board of Foreign Missions, his brother, Rev. Douglas and Polly Coole, and the correspondence and papers of his parents, Thomas and Cora Coole. Included is writing about missionary life in China and reviews of books on Chinese coinage, including Coole's. Also included is financial information regarding their China voyages.

Arthur and Ella Coole were Methodist missionaries serving in North China from 1924-1947. Arthur worked as a teacher and administrator, and Ella taught English and was active in church affairs. Arthur Braddan Coole was born January 6, 1900, in Birmingham, Kansas. His family lived in Kutien, Fukien, China from 1906-1913 where his father was a medical missionary.
