William Bittle Wells papers, 1890-1960.

Collection consists of biographical material, correspondence, high school scrapbooks, class papers from Stanford University, business files, personal papers and mementos, manuscripts, and photographs. The biographical material contains the Wells Outline, a series of scrapbook pages which roughly conform to the events in his life, and drafts of Wells' autobiographical "Story of my life." The business correspondence details Wells' involvement in Pacific monthly magazine and his career at New York Life. Much of the personal correspondence deals with Wells' religious interest. The high school scrapbooks contain clippings, student publications, and personal observations. Stanford University materials consist of class notes, essays, scrapbooks, and yearbooks. Also included is a musical composition written by Wells. Business files include material on the Pacific monthly, Sunset magazine, Harriman Lines, Better cooking, Wells and Company, New York Life Insurance Company, and Willamette Iron and Steel Company. The personal papers include Wells' religious writings and an interview with Homer Davenport.

William Bittle Wells was born in Floyd County, Virginia in 1872. The family moved to California in 1874 and settled in Portland, Oregon in 1881. He graduated from Stanford University in 1897. At Stanford, Wells developed an interest in publishing and publicity and was editor of several school newspapers. In 1898 Wells founded the western magazine, Pacific monthly.
