The collection contains a letter from Samuel Clapham, Jr., Antigua, to Samuel Clapham, Chidshll,1753, describing the island, the sugar trade, and his voyage including an encounter with Barbary pirates. He briefly mentions his work "sorting and putting in order the papers from the Ruins of the Hurricane ... 2 years ago." Letters from Sarah Garthwaite, Antigua, 1790, 1793, 1800, to Samuel Clapham, Chidsill, Wakefield, Yorkshire, discuss her health and are filled with religious sentiment including consolation on the loss of a child and send and request news of family and friends. Letters to Josias Claphman, of Leesburg, Va., 1818 and 1820, from cousin Anne Nussey of Bristol Smithies, Leeds, give family news and summarizes hard economic times and radical political affairs, including a brief reference to the trial of Henry "Orator" Hunt after the Peterloo Massacre in Manchester. A letter, 1848, from Josias Clapham, Lovettsville, Va. to his son Samuel, in Frederick, Md., writes about his purchase of Dr. Marlow's Academy. Letters, 1852, from M.E. "Bettie" Durborow and other family memers [of Loudoun County, Va.?] to James Durborow who is away at a [Methodist Church?] Conference, sends news of family and friends at home. With the letters are miscellaneous genealogical scraps giving a collateral connection to George Washington.
