The Independent Order of Good Templars was founded in Utica, New York, in 1851, when it was first known as the Knights of Jerico. The secret order admitted women on a equal basis and focused exclusively on promoting the temperance movement. The organization next became known as the International Order of Good Templars as the movement spread to England and Scandinavia.
