The League of Women Voters of the United States was formed in 1919 when the Nineteenth Amendment enfranchising women was passed. It grew out of the National Women's Suffrage Association. The League of Women Voters of Chicago was organized in 1950, when ten Chicago-area chapters of the League of Women Voters of Cook County merged.
